MDC to offer three free programs at Meramec Conservation Area this September

SULLIVAN, Mo.—The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Meramec Conservation Area near Sullivan offers more than 4,000 acres of lush Ozark forests and provides a paved ADA walking path, challenging natural surface hiking trails, horseback riding, and boat access on the Meramec River.

MDC is hosting three programs during the month of September to highlight multiple aspects of Meramec Conservation Area, including a Five Mile Loop Hike, Compass and Map class, and a Wild Edibles program.

All programs are free and advanced online registration is required for each person using the links provided below.

Five-Mile Loop Hike, Friday, Sept. 11 from 9 – 2 p.m.

  • Get to know Meramec Conservation Area on this guided hike. Hikers will venture beyond the paved loop and enjoy a scenic trek winding through natural leaf-covered trails and oak- hickory forests.  They’ll discover facts about plant and wildlife native to the area along the way.  This moderate hike features an elevation change of 606 feet and is recommended for intermediate hikers.

  • This program is open to those ages 16 years and up.

Compass and Map, Thursday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. – noon.

  • The compass is an excellent tool to help you reach your destination, identify your location, and map your route. Learn how to do all three by joining a treasure hunt for free giveaways. This event will take place outdoors; participants should come prepared with proper footwear for gravel trails and bring water.

  • Open to all ages.

Wild Edibles, Thursday, Sept. 24 from 1- 3 p.m.

  • Take a relaxing 1.3-mile hike on the paved Woodland loop trail and learn about the different wild edibles plants that can be found along the way. Participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.

  • This event is open to all ages.

The entrance to Meramec Conservation Area is located at 3220 South Highway 185.  From Sullivan, take the Highway 185 exit at I-44 and go south for five miles.  Look for the area sign on the north side of the road.
